Riverside Education Support Centre follows a Structured Synthetics Phonics program called PLD. PLD aligns with the Science of Reading and facilitates a whole school approach to Literacy. PLD is derived from a multitude of disciplines, and outcomes are maximised for children in Literacy, Oral Language and Movement & Motor.
Communication is the fundamental component for every child and Riverside Education Support Centre places an emphasis on developing communication competency for students with complex communication needs. Our school uses Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in the form of PODD, to ensure students are engaging in both expressive and receptive language exchanges with a focus on communication being embedded in all learning.
All students undertake numeracy activities daily, learning skills consistent with their individual learning abilities. Students develop understanding by using numbers in everyday situations with an emphasis on promoting functional skills for life such as exploring the concepts of time, measurement and money.
Staff at the school have developed a ‘Maths Tracking and Development Tool’ which aims to assist teachers to target specific learning for each child and aid in the preparation of Individual Education Plans. The tool is individualised and follows students as they move through their primary school years.
Protective Behaviours is a personal safety program which aims to promote resilience in children using a range of developmentally appropriate strategies. Ultimately, as our students are most at risk and vulnerable, the aim is to encourage our students to become more assertive and resilient to risks or problems they may encounter in their lives.
Whole class and individualised programmes are taught to the students including raising their awareness of their own feelings relating to safety and how to build safety networks. The promotion of personal safety and resilience is generalised at every opportunity.
One of the things I love most about my son is his individuality and I have enjoyed watching him learn his strengths in an environment that encourages uniqueness and independence while supporting my family in all the challenges we face in our daily lives.
Tate says that he loves the library and that his school always has fun activities. He has always been an enthusiastic participant in school events and it is so valuable to me as a parent to watch him grow as part of such a close and valued community.
