Riverside Education Support Centre Policies

As an Independent Public School, Riverside ESC complies with the policies and regulations of the Government of Western Australia. Information on governing policies is available from the W.A. Department of Education policy library.

Below is important policy and procedural information specific to our school community.

Student Uniform and Dress Code

Riverside Education Support Centre requires students attending the school to abide by its dress code, as laid out in the Riverside Primary Schools’ Student Dress Policy Summary Version (2023). Both Riverside ESC and Riverside PS wear the same uniform. This assists with the integration theme underpinning the development of social and communications skills.

Students arriving late must present at the office upon arrival. A LEAVE PASS must be collected from the office if a student leaves before the end of the school day.

School Office Hours – 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM.

Student Absenteeism and Illness

The School Education Act requires that all school age (6 – 17 years) children attend school each day of the school year. Parents/carers are required to notify the school if their child will be absent or late prior to the commencement of the school day (8:35 am).

How to Notify the School:

  • Come in to the school office before school starts.
  • Phone the Office on 9583 2428.
  • Send an email with an explanation for and anticipated duration of absence to riverside.esc@education.wa.edu.au

School Follow-Up and Obligations:

The school seeks to minimise concerns with the home-to-school movement of students. If we have not heard from a parent/carer and a student does not arrive at school, a phone call will be made to the contact person(s) listed on the school enrolment form to seek an explanation. For this reason, it is vital to immediately inform the school if contact details change.

Frequent, unexplained absences will be referred to the District Attendance Coordinator at District Office.

Managing Student Healthcare (Medications)

Student safety and wellbeing are our highest priority. We therefore encourage parents to work in partnership with the school by providing up-to-date medical information and immediate notification of changes to emergency contact details.

Unwell Students
Students who are unwell should not be sent to school. If a student is unwell or is injured at school, the parent/carer will be contacted and asked to take them home. If you are not available, your emergency contact will be asked to respond. In an emergency situation, a doctor or ambulance may be called.

For administration of short term medication such as a course of antibiotics, the school requires written authority from parents/carers, using Form 3 Administration of Medication. This form is available on request at the school office.

Note:

  • Medication must be clearly labelled with the child’s name.
  • Medication must arrive at school in its original packaging and with dosage and expiry date affixed and legible.
  • Home packaged medications cannot be accepted.
  • Staff are not permitted to adjust doses, therefore tablets to be administered as half doses (for example) must be halved by parents/carers and delivered to the school in original packaging, as noted above.
  • The only medication students are permitted to retain in their school bags are asthma puffers.

Long Term Use of Medication

If you require the school to administer medication to your child for a period of more than two weeks, and if you have not already done so, you may need to complete a Student Health Care Summary and a Management/Emergency Response Plan for your child’s particular health need. In most instances, this documentation will have been completed when you enrolled your child or as part of the school’s process for updating student health care records. If this is not the case, please contact the School Office.

The notes above for short term medication (e.g. packaging) also apply to long term medication.

Head Lice
Schools have a responsibility to ensure head lice is not spread throughout the school. If the school suspects a student has head lice, it may exclude them from attending school until treatment has commenced. Your child may return to school when all live head lice have been removed.
Visit the Department of Health website, HealthyWA, to find out about treating head lice.

Managing Student Health Care
For students whose health care needs can be supported using the resources available to the school, principals will:

  • request parents to complete one or more of the Department’s standardised management and emergency response plans (staff only) or provide an alternative plan from their child’s medical practitioner;
  • manage the implementation and updating of student health care plans; and
  • arrange the training necessary to enable staff to support student health care.

For students whose health care needs cannot be met by the school using the resources available, the principal will refer the matter to the Director of Education.

Immunisation

Schools can only enrol Kindergarten students with acceptable evidence of immunisation status or who are exempt because of particular family circumstances. All enrolments must be supported by up-to-date immunisation and Medicare information.

The following information has been provided by the WA Department of Education.

No Jab No Play – Kindergarten enrolment

  • On enrolment in Kindergarten, a child must now have either:
    • an Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement, no more than two months old with a status of ‘up to date’; or
    • an AIR Immunisation History Form, no more than six months old, if the child is on a catch up schedule; or
    • a valid immunisation certificate issued or declared by the Chief Health Officer.
  • Where a child does not have an ‘up to date’ Immunisation History Statement, exemptions because of particular family circumstances may apply. These exemptions are approved by the principal.
  • Where a child enrolling has a Medicare number available it should be recorded at the time of enrolment.

Pre-primary to Year 12 enrolments

  • The immunisation status of all children enrolling in the compulsory years of school (Pre-primary to Year 12) must be recorded. You may need to provide an Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement for your child that is not more than 2 months old.

Communication Policy and Charter (Families and Staff)

Riverside Education Support Centre values positive relationships and recognises that communication is of vital importance in strengthening and maintaining these relationships.

Open communication is encouraged, whereby staff, students and parents/carers share good news, discuss issues and maintain an ongoing positive dialogue. The school’s intention is to at all times work in partnership with families to support inclusivity, the health and wellbeing of all parties and promote respectful relationships.

For a full statement of communication policy and procedures, download the Parent Communication Policy and Charter & Communication Guidelines for Staff.
