Riverside Connects with New Bali Sister School
Riverside Education Support Centre became a member of the AdoptASchool Association (AAS) in 2011. It is a program whereby WA schools can sponsor a school in Indonesia, which aims to encourage friendship and cultural understanding between WA and Balinese schools. This year Riverside ESC has a new Sister School.
At the heart of the decision to sponsor a Bali school is the objective to promote core shared values such as respects and concern for others, through developing understanding, tolerance, care and compassion. Students and staff of Riverside ESC are involved in annual fundraising events which assists in developing connections with our sister school but also promotes the value of helping others.
Photos of the Sister School are shared with our students, prompting discussions focused on identifying similarities and differences between schools. Students of Riverside ESC are quick to identify all the available resources in our school such as iPads, smartboards, construction equipment, robotics, art and craft materials and playgrounds. Students and staff have also been able to view some photos of resources that have been purchased for their Bali Sister school through their fundraising efforts e.g. hand wash basin, toilet, computer.
Our new Sister School is a government primary school from years 1-6 and has 188 students and 15 staff members. It is situated about an hour north of Denpasar’s International airport in the area of Badung. Our contact at the school is an English teacher who spent some time in Perth learning English.
We are looking forward to building a relationship with our new sister school.
